Sue Lyons: Author of Fracking Moratorium Resolution Formally Adopted by the Pennsylvania Democratic Party *Interview* 2/2 – Counterpoint PA 7/29-8/4/2013

The Breakdown for this edition of Counterpoint PA features the second half of my interview with Sue Lyons, author of the resolution calling for a moratorium on fracking that was recently formally adopted as the official position of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.

Fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing, which ProPublica reports is “a process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States, where millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped underground to break apart the rock and release the gas. Scientists are worried that the chemicals used in fracturing may pose a threat either underground or when waste fluids are handled and sometimes spilled on the surface.”

Despite these concerns, fracking was exempted from the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act by the administration of President George W. Bush. Just this month, conservative Republicans further deregulated fracking when Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a bill into law to let pooling of fracking leases include any natural gas drilling leases that don’t specifically prohibit hydraulic fracturing, which is particularly egregious because fracking has only been so prevalent in recent years, so leases signed decades  ago wouldn’t normally say not to frack because there was virtually no fracking then. Now, you or someone in your community could have an old natural gas drilling lease from before fracking was big or maybe even before it existed and be forced by the state government to have your land fracked thanks to the Republicans. [NOTE: I had this wrong, the relevant factor in the contract is whether pooling was specifically mentioned, not fracking. For more details, check out this video in which I explain it correctly: http://counterpointpa.org/new-fracking-deregulation-used-immediately-corporation-lobbied-sue-pa-families-pa-headlines-46-counterpoint-pa-825-312013/ ]

In addition to being the author of the fracking moratorium resolution adopted as the official stance of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, Sue Lyons is also recording secretary of the Monroe County Democratic Committee and chair of the Monroe County Progressive Democrats, one of few county-wide progressive organizations in PA, of which, full disclosure, I am the vice chair. In this second half of the interview, we discuss her studiously documented list of top 10 myths about fracking, what it says about the Pennsylvania Democratic Party that it now officially favors a moratorium on fracking, the Gasland documentaries by fellow Pennsylvanian Josh Fox, and the future of the anti-fracking movement in PA. Sometimes it may be a little difficult to tell what I’m saying because as host of a grassroots newscast I’m kind of working with just one microphone, which Sue had on for the interview. And now, the second half of my interview with Sue Lyons.

[No transcript for the interview, sorry!]
Thanks again to Sue Lyons. To see the first half of this interview, in which Sue talks about how she got interested in fracking, the process of getting the resolution adopted, her experience as a member of the Pennsylvania Democratic Committee including its progressive caucus, and how the natural gas industry misleads the public about fracking, you can visit CounterpointPA.org and check the new categorized video archive for Environment / Energy, fracking, or The Breakdown.
