PA Democratic Gov. Candidate Katie McGinty Takes Questions on Fracking, Marijuana Reform & Genetically Engineered Foods – Counterpoint PA 9/24-30/2013

The Breakdown for this edition of Counterpoint PA features an exclusive video I have for you of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie McGinty at the Monroe County Democratic Women’s Eleanor Roosevelt Brunch, where she took hard progressive questions about natural gas fracking, marijuana reform, and labeling genetically modified foods, and also answered questions about education and social services that are less divisive among Democrats.

According to her website, Katie McGinty was the Secretary of the Department of Environmental protection for six years, worked on reauthorization of the Clean Air Act, advised Al Gore when he was a senator on technology and environmental issues, and was the Chair the of White House Council on Environmental Quality in the 1990‘s. It also touts her business experience as Senior Visiting Fellow at the Tata Energy Research Institute in New Delhi, Vice President for Asset Management at Natsource, Operating Partner of Element Partners, and a director at Thar Energy.

Now with all those really long job descriptions, I probably don’t need to tell you that in Democratic gubernatorial primary field full of establishment figures, Katie McGinty is probably one of the most establishment, which you’ll see for herself when she answers the questions on fracking and marijuana reform.

Fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing, which ProPublica reports is “a process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States, where millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped underground to break apart the rock and release the gas. Scientists are worried that the chemicals used in fracturing may pose a threat either underground or when waste fluids are handled and sometimes spilled on the surface.”

And that’s the topic of the first two questions McGinty takes. I’m skipping right to her taking questions, but check CounterpointPA.org soon for a bonus full-length video of her entire appearance, including her stump speech. I’m leaving in the first questioner even though it’s difficult to hear him, but his main point is that he doesn’t see any redeeming factors about fracking so he favors a moratorium, and he wants to know if she agrees. The next question is also about fracking, then you’ll hear me ask about marijuana reform and labeling genetically modified foods, and last are the education and social services questions.

[There is no transcript for Katie McGinty's question-and-answer session, my apologies.]

Katie McGinty opposes a moratorium on fracking even though she can’t quite explain how final regulations can come before sound science, she wants prison sentencing to be more sane and humane yet she opposes marijuana legalization and even medical marijuana, but at least she came out in strong support of labeling genetically modified foods and that other stuff all the Democrats are going to agree on anyway. I’m completely undecided about next year’s Democratic primary right now and will probably support the most progressive candidate, but while I’m not ruling out Katie McGinty or anyone else, I did not feel she was especially progressive. But now you’ve seen her answers for yourself and can make up your own mind.
